Michigan's trees turn in a long wave, not on one statewide day. The Michigan DNR points visitors to a fall color tour and to a map of predicted peak times. 1 Pure Michigan's Fall Color Map is the live map both agencies send people to. 12

How the color moves

Pure Michigan says peak color begins early in the northern Upper Peninsula and unfolds into the Lower Peninsula. 2 That is the pattern. The week it happens in any one county changes with weather. This page does not name a peak date. Use the DNR state forests page and the Pure Michigan Fall Color Map the week you plan to drive. 12

Places on this site

The National Park Service lists fall color viewing among the things to do at Pictured Rocks. 3 Sleeping Bear Dunes posts leaf updates on its current conditions page when the season is on. 4 The other place pages here sit in woods or on a Great Lakes shore that people visit in autumn. None of them replace the two color maps.

A note on this year

Color reports are for the week they are written. A line on a park conditions page is not a forecast for next October. Check the maps, then the managing park, before you go.
