Michigan has more shoreline than a person can walk in a year, and the lights along it are how a lot of us learned the lakes. This hub gathers the lighthouse place pages we already keep. It is not a complete list of lights in the state. Each short page below has its own sources, last reviewed date and next review.

For a gift of one of these lights, see Michigan lighthouse ornaments. We print Big Sable Point and Grand Haven. The other lights on this hub do not have a listing yet.

Lake Michigan, west shore

Big Sable Point Light stands in Ludington State Park. The U.S. Coast Guard dates the tower to 1867 and describes a white tower with the middle third black. 1 The DNR lists a 1.8-mile sand-and-gravel walk to the light. 2

Little Sable Point Light is in the south end of Silver Lake State Park, on the same coast. The Coast Guard calls it a brick conical tower, 107 feet tall, first lit in 1874, and it still holds a third-order Fresnel lens from that year. 34 This is not Big Sable. They are two towers.

Point Betsie Light stands near Frankfort, south of Sleeping Bear Dunes. The Coast Guard dates the current Cream City brick tower to 1858 and still lists it as an active aid to navigation. 5

Holland State Park is the beach across the channel from Holland Harbor Light, the red pier light people call Big Red. The DNR writes the park for that view. 10 We do not have a Big Red listing.

Grand Haven State Park is the sandy beach at the river mouth and the two red lights on the south pier. 11 The iced catwalk is the winter scene we print.

Lake Superior

Au Sable Light Station is the only lighthouse in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The park dates the tower to 1873–1874, 86 feet tall, and staffed until 1958. 6 You walk 1.5 miles one way from Hurricane River Campground. 7

Lake Huron

Tawas Point State Park holds Tawas Point Light. The Coast Guard says a first light went up in 1853, when the point was still called Ottawa Point, and that the present brick conical tower, white with red trim, was built in 1876. 8 The DNR dates the tower to 1876 and calls it the sole Victorian-era style station built on the Great Lakes. 9

Gifts

The lighthouse gifts we make are on Michigan lighthouse ornaments: Big Sable Point and Grand Haven, plain or personalized, plus coaster sets of four identical coasters. Current prices are on the Etsy listings.

Safety

Towers, piers and lakeshore walks change with ice and wind. This page does not report today's climbs or flags. Read the place page for the light you are visiting before you go.
